Dynamics of an AWD Car
The transmission system of an AWD car is different from any normal two wheel drive car. The presence of a third differential system to regulate the amount of torque being transmitted to either the front or rear wheels is a distinguishing feature of such a car. This variable transmission unit makes these cars slightly expensive as compared to other cars - besides, repairs and maintenance require the skills of a pro. The need to distribute engine torque to all wheels through three differentials, increases the mechanical loss in engine power by up to 15 %, in comparison to two wheeled cars. This loss of engine power translates to lower fuel usage. This reduced economy may have a bearing while choosing all wheel drive cars under $10000.
As mentioned above, an AWD car provides enhanced handling on low-traction surfaces. Under normal circumstances or dry surfaces, the traction or friction on each wheel is uniform. In conditions such as ice, mud or slick the traction on each wheel may vary. In an AWD the traction on each wheel is sensed with the help of sensors, and locks the wheel with a lower traction or lower friction, thereby avoiding the wheels from spinning out of control. This system of locking a differential is done manually on some 4 wheel drive cars.
The use of sensors to electronically regulate the torque transmission to the wheels makes it a superior system of navigating through variable traction surfaces. This high-end involvement of technology increases the price of the car. Now when opting for a second hand AWD, it is advisable that you check on the functioning of the traction system of the car you intend to buy.

For help on how to pick out an AWD car, visit a trusted dealership that can give you a detailed overview of the model you would like to buy. Online websites are also helpful in comparing the car you'd like, with other AWD cars by presenting a comparison of each one's specs. Once you have all the information you need, have someone take a look at the car's parts to make sure they're genuine and in working condition. Test-drive the car before making a commitment to a purchase.
