There is a simple process involved in getting a motorcycle license. This process will be explained in the article that follows.
When you go in for getting the license, the first thing which comes to our mind is how long does it take to get a motorcycle license and is it hard to get one? We will try and answer these questions in the course of the article. For now, let us take a look at the preliminarily procedure for obtaining a license.
Step 1
To get a license, you will have to study the Motorcycle Operations Manual thoroughly. This is available at the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and contains things like road safety rules and the like. There will be a written test before the actual riding test. You will also need to inquire about the eligibility requirements for the exam.
Step 2
Take an appointment for a test with the DMV well ahead of the date you are planning to give it. It will spare you from waiting in a line and wasting a lot of time. Then visit the nearest DMV office, complete the form #MV – 44. Indicate the fact that you are applying for a motorcycle permit. Keep your car driving license ready just in case. To begin with, you will need to take the learner’s license written test. You can also approach driving schools and see if they can help you in getting a license.
Step 3
Finally, practicing with your permit is very important. Practicing will also mean applying and following the regulations given in the motorcycle operations manual. Riding on the roads with reasonable traffic for at least 30 hours is necessary. After this, call for an appointment for a road skills test and on the day of the test, have all the essential documents―most of which are for identification purposes, ready with you. The manual will cover most of the information you will require.
Step 4
After you give the road skills exam and pass it, half your job will be done. Once you pass the road skills test, you will be issued a temporary license. In around a week or so, after you get the temporary license, go to the DMV’s office with your driver’s license, temporary license, and permit. Fill the MV – 44 form once again and without fail intimate the authorities that you are applying for a permanent motorcycle license.
Finally, submit the form and pay the requisite fees. It takes around $30 to get a permanent motorcycle license. It might vary from state to state. Once this procedure has been completed, your job is done. You will receive it via mail in around 3 weeks.
The form number for every state will be different, which you can get to know from your local DMV. The one which has been mentioned above (MV-44), is specifically for New York. Apart from that, some of the requirements regarding examination may differ from state to state, but the core process of obtaining a motorcycle license will be more or less the same.
